At a place with 130 years of history, sometimes you never know what you’re going to find.

A renovation just last year of The Carolina Hotel, which originally opened on New Year’s Eve in 1901, revealed something most working here had never seen before – the walk from the central lobby toward the east wing is actually lit with natural sunlight. This was found after renovations discovered 40 feet of original arched ceiling and dormer windows had been covered up years and years ago. It’s breathtaking the first time you see it. (And most every time after that.)

Pinehurst does have a lost and found in our club storage area, and in it is exactly what you would expect to find at a golf resort. There are myriad clubs – wedges, for sure, left behind either through forgetfulness or perhaps on purpose after years and multiple swings of torment and unfavorable results.

Headcovers, range finders, drivers, towels. All the usual suspects, and some do get found and claimed and returned to guests. Those are happy reunions.

Some things, though, you see fewer and fewer of. Such as cameras. Disposable cameras. Digital cameras.

Well, we still found a few, some dating back as far as 20 years.

But finding the cameras was just the beginning of this story.

Because one had a name on it.
