Pinehurst No. 8 opened in 1996 to celebrate Pinehurst’s first 100 years, earning it the nickname “The Centennial Course.” Originally designed by Tom Fazio, No. 8 combines classic Pinehurst elements with the natural beauty of the landscape.
In 2022, No. 8 underwent subtle aesthetic and agronomic renovations. Leaving the course architecture untouched, No. 8 now boasts TifEagle greens, fully restored bunkers with fresh sand and improved drainage throughout the course. The result is a firmer, faster feel, the way Tom Fazio originally intended it.
With the renovations comes a new logo with new flags, tees, and merch.
The design of this course is unique when compared to other Pinehurst courses, but it still has that distinct Pinehurst feel. Designated as a Signature Sanctuary by the Audubon Society, you’ll enjoy beautiful views of wetlands and plenty of longleaf pines. Featuring dramatic contours, elevation changes and movements in the fairways, each distinct hole will be sure to keep you engaged throughout your round.
Both courses are par 72, but No. 8 is nearly 500 yards shorter than No. 2. No. 8 features larger and more varied greens, more greenside bunkers and more rough than No. 2. With average-to-narrow width fairways and fast greens, No. 8 requires attention from tee to green in order to score well.
Overall, a round on No. 8 is one of the most elevated experiences in golf at Pinehurst.
No. 8 is located approximately one mile, or five minutes, north of Pinehurst Resort. It’s a short drive, but golfers enjoy the change of pace and tranquil setting offered by this course.
Because it is located away from the resort, No. 8 has its own driving range, practice green and short game area for you to warm up before your round. The bar & grill in the No. 8 clubhouse is undergoing renovations and is scheduled to reopen in Spring 2023.
If you’d like to play with a caddie, be sure to reserve one when you book your tee time. Carts are available, although close greens and tees make this course a great one to walk.
