What To Know Before You Play No. 1

Wondering which course to play in Pinehurst? Course No. 1 is where it all started in Pinehurst and makes a great start for any trip. Running along the historic Pinehurst Harness Track, the course is just over 6,000 yards from the tips, making it a manageable introduction to Donald Ross.

Pinehurst No. 1 opened in 1898, and today, its design still reflects the era. The course was cut from the land without the use of bulldozers, so you’ll experience minimal grading changes.

How To Plan Your Itinerary

If you’re looking for a warmup before diving into the famed No. 2, then No. 1 is a great choice. You’ll experience an authentic Donald Ross design, with a variety of birdie opportunities and challenges to keep all golfers interested for 18 holes. Typical of Ross’ designs, there are difficult holes followed by short ones.

The course also makes for the perfect late afternoon round, especially in the summer. Take a cart and you can be done in 3ish hours. If you’re walking, expect 3.5 to 4.5 hours. And don’t forget to check out what our Director of Golf Ben Bridgers and longtime Vice President of Course Maintenance Bob Farren had to say about playing No. 1.

What To Expect When You Get There

To get to No. 1, there’s no need to drive. Leave your car at the hotel and take the trolley right down the road to the main clubhouse.

You’ll be greeted at the front entrance and we’ll help you find your way to the driving range, 91st Hole, or pro shop before you tee off.

Before you tee off:

  • There is a driving range conveniently located at the main clubhouse
  • Carts are available on No. 1
  • Caddies are available on No. 1

Hole 18 ends at the clubhouse, making for an easy post-round food and beverage opportunity. Break for lunch at The Deuce, grab a snack from the 91st hole, or sit down for beer and cocktails on the veranda.

At the end of the day, the trolley will be waiting to shuttle you back to the hotels.
