Throughout its history, Pinehurst has hosted local, national, sectional and professional-level tennis events. Our facilities offer members and guests clay tennis courts, a full-service tennis shop, and a full staff of USPTA/PTR/PPR-certified professional instructors. As a resort guest, you can enjoy access to all club amenities including ball machines, equipment and court rentals. In addition, we offer a wide variety of instruction to all levels and ages.

Meet the Tennis Professionals
Matt Downing, Director of Racquet and Lawn Sports
Matt Downing is a native to the Pinehurst area. He attended Sandhills Community College and was a player on the school’s first Men’s tennis team. After completing his studies at Sandhills, Matt started his tennis professional career at the Lawn & Tennis Club of N.C., where he spent four years. In 1995, he became Head Tennis Professional at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club. In his first eight years with Pinehurst, Matt was in charge of junior programming and assisted the Director of Tennis with club & resort activities. In 2003, he became the Director of Tennis and is responsible for all member and resort programming. In addition to managing the tennis operation, he also oversees pickleball, croquet, lawn bowls, and fitness center operations. He, along with the Pinehurst tennis staff, host events such as the USTA Men’s National Clay Court Championships, USTA Boy’s & Girl’s Zonal Team Championships, the USTA Adult State League Championships, and various resort tennis events. Matt is a 30+ year USPTA certified Professional, and holds PTR Professional distinctions in both 10 & under, and 11 to 17 tennis education. He enjoys teaching tennis more than ever and looks forward to growing and developing new and existing activities at the club.
Kevin Criscoe, Head Tennis Professional
Kevin joined the Pinehurst staff in 2006 and has been working full-time in the private racquet industry for over 20 years. He played at the collegiate level at Methodist University where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business with concentration in Professional Tennis Management and his Master’s in Business Administration. Kevin is a USPTA Certified Elite Professional, PPR Certified Professional, and PTR Certified Professional with specialized certifications in 10 and Under, 11 to 17, and Adult Development. He completed the USTA High Performance Coaching Program in 2013, earning him the distinction of Specialist in Competitive Player Development. Prior to joining Pinehurst, Kevin was an instructor at Philadelphia Cricket Club in Chestnut Hill, PA, and Fairfield County Hunt Club in Westport, CT. Kevin’s positive, upbeat attitude and energy have earned him a loyal following over his 15+ years at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.
Dana Parziale, Head Tennis Professional
Dana joined the Pinehurst Staff in 2022 and is excited about the future of tennis at Pinehurst. Formerly the Director of Racquets at the Agawam Hunt Club in Rhode Island, Dana has an extensive teaching and playing background. A four year letterwinner at Bryant University, Dana has also competed at the professional level and saw his best results in 2019 where he won the USTA Men’s National Grass Court Championships in both singles and doubles. As an instructor Dana has worked at many prestigious tennis clubs including the International Tennis Hall of Fame, The Ritz-Carlton in Grand Cayman, and the Dunes Club in Narragansett Rhode Island. Dana enjoys working with all ages and abilities of players both in group and private sessions. Off the courts he enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter and his three rescue dogs.
