In 2014, for the first time in the history of golf, the men’s and women’s U.S. Opens were played in consecutive weeks on Pinehurst No. 2.
Ten years later, the North & South Amateur is taking that idea a step further.
In 2024, less than 10 days after the U.S. Open is played on No. 2 for the fourth time in 25 years, the men’s and women’s North & South Amateurs will be contested over the same week, June 25-29.
“The North & South Amateur has been one of the elite amateur championships for over 120 years, and both the men’s and women’s championships continue to resonate today with many of the best amateurs the game has to offer,” says Matt Nunez, Pinehurst Resort’s Tournament Director. “Being able to combine the two championships into one week will offer us all the opportunity to see so much of the game’s future at one time and at one of the world’s greatest settings in golf.”
Nick Dunlap won the 2023 Men's North & South Amateur.
The 2024 championships will be contested on Pinehurst No. 2 and No. 4, with two rounds of stroke play on June 25 and 26. The championship calendar, which will feature full fields of 120 players, will be as follows:
- June 25 – Stroke play, women on No. 2, men on No. 4
- June 26 – Stroke play, men on No. 2, women on No. 4

Anna Morgan won the Women's North & South Amateur in 2023.
The men’s North & South Amateur is the longest consecutively running national amateur championship in the United States, having been played every year since its inception in 1901. The same can be said for the women’s North & South, which has been played every year since its initial competition in 1903.
Past champions of both events are among the most notable names in golf’s history.
Such legends as Francis Ouimet, Walter Travis, Harvie Ward, Frank Stranahan, Jack Nicklaus and major champions Curtis Strange, Hal Sutton, Corey Pavin and Davis Love III have won the men’s North & South Amateur. Two of the last four U.S. Amateur champions, Tyler Strafaci and defending champion Nick Dunlap, have also captured the coveted Putter Boy trophy.
Many of the LPGA Tour’s famed “13 Founders” played in Pinehurst, and three of them – Opal Hill, Louise Suggs and Babe Zaharias – were North & South champions. The recent history of the Women’s North & South is filled with recognizable names, becoming something of a rite of passage on the way to the LPGA Tour. At the 2023 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Baltusrol, seven Women’s North & South champions were in the field, including recent winners Gina Kim (2021) and Gabriela Ruffels (2019). In the two decades since 2003 when Brittany Lang prevailed, 15 past Women’s North & South titleholders have been seen playing the LPGA Tour, including Yani Tseng (2005), Morgan Pressel (2004), Danielle Kang (2011), Austin Ernst (2012), Ally Ewing (2013) and Alison Lee (2014).
Applications for playing the men’s and women’s North & South Amateur will be available on March 1, 2024, and will be found on the Tournaments page for Pinehurst.com.
