ANNOUNCING THE EAGLE COIN AT PINEHURST NO. 10

Look closely when you stand on the tee of the 634-yard, par-5 10th hole of Pinehurst No. 10, and sometimes, at the top of a tree to your right, you might catch a glimpse of a bald eagle.

It is a breathtaking sight.

It also might be the only eagle you ever see on that hole.

But, what if, with a bald eagle perched or flying overhead, you make an eagle on the long 10th hole of No. 10?

That’s something to celebrate. To honor. To remember.

So let’s do that.

At Pinehurst, when you make a 2 on No. 2, you have a good story and a great souvenir in the Deuce coin. It’s a great thing that happens every day.

Make an eagle on the challenging 10th hole on Pinehurst No.10, though, and now you will have what we think will be our rarest keepsake. More people have the special tees from Dornoch Cottage than eagles on the 10th hole.

Introducing what might be Pinehurst’s most difficult item to achieve – the Eagle coin.

So, make a 3 on the 10th hole of No. 10, bring your scorecard and verify to the pro shop, and you will receive the No. 10 Eagle coin.

How many will we give away?

Time to find out.

APRIL FOOLS: PINEHURST RESORT CELEBRATES THE GOOD – AND THE BAD – IN A ROUND OF GOLF WITH NEW “X ON X” COIN

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

By Alex Poologar

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA – Golf, even on the best of days and definitely on the worst of them, can sometimes feel like a fool’s errand.

At Pinehurst Resort, it is time to celebrate this fact.

One of Pinehurst’s most coveted not-so-hidden gems is the Deuce Coin. As most guests and potential visitors and players at Pinehurst know, if you make a “2 on 2,” i.e., a birdie on one of the par-3s or a miraculous eagle on a par-4 on venerated Pinehurst No. 2, a player can bring his or her scorecard to the Deuce bar and receive a Deuce Coin.

But while some not-so-good players may luck their way into a birdie on the 6th hole here and there, really, the Deuce Coin tends to favor the skilled player over the hacker.

That needs to change. And today, at Pinehurst, it does.

To better commemorate players of all skill levels, Pinehurst is excited to announce its newest hidden gem – the “10 on 10” Coin.

A year ago this month, Pinehurst celebrated its first opening of an original golf course in nearly 30 years with the unveiling of Tom Doak’s newest masterpiece, Pinehurst No. 10. Named by multiple outlets as the “Best New Course in Golf,” No. 10 is unlike any course in the North Carolina Sandhills, boasting nearly 75 feet of elevation change and dynamic, dramatic on-course vistas and challenges.

Challenges, especially.

Some may consider No. 10 to be a strong test of the game, perhaps even difficult in some stretches. But isn’t all golf difficult? As No Laying Up’s Kevin Van Valkenburg wrote in a column, “Golf makes gentle boys into monstrous men for the briefest of seconds before the mixture of embarrassment and shame sets in.”

Forget the shame. Forget the embarrassment. Golf is hard enough. Therefore, any player who makes a 10 on any hole on Pinehurst No. 10 can now receive a distinct keepsake unlike any in their collection with the special “X on X” Coin – a perfect representation of the worst of scorecard entries.

“Golf should be a game enjoyed by everyone all the time, as best they can, even when the inevitable happens and that one dastardly hole ruins an otherwise good score,” says Pinehurst Resort Vice President of Golf Matt Barksdale. “Pinehurst is proud to celebrate all of the moments on the golf course, and not just the good ones or even the most unlikely and impossible of ones, like an eagle on the 634-yard, par-5 10th hole on No. 10. Like that would ever happen.”

Pinehurst Resort plans to produce a first run of 250,000 “X on X” coins.

“Hopefully that is enough for the rest of this year,” adds Barksdale.
