This U.S. Open preview video from The Fried Egg is really great stuff, opening with several minutes between Bill Coore and 2006 U.S. Open Champion Geoff Ogilvy explaining what makes Pinehurst No. 2 special from a competitive standpoint. There’s really insightful stuff here, especially around the 5-minute mark when Ogilvy begins talking about playing from No. 2’s greens surrounds. Love the talk about how No. 2 mentally plays with the best players’ minds.
The second half of the video goes in-depth with Coore about the 2010-11 restoration of No. 2. Ten years ago when the 2014 U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open were played in back-to-back weeks, there was a lot of coverage then about the restored No. 2 and the tremendous work by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw.
The restoration doesn’t get as much discussion a decade later, but this look back is really well done and it is fun to watch and listen to a master like Coore explain what went behind it and how the restoration has held up – and yes, blossomed – since then.
